Five Points was the first predominately African-American neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. It was home to over 50 bars and clubs in the Roaring '20s, 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Two of these buildings, The Rossonian Hotel and Benny Hooper's Casino, now Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, played major roles as venues for jazz musicians. Benny Hoopers became famous for its after-hours jazz scene and some of the greatest jazz musicians, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Fats Domino, Ike & Tina Turner, James Brown, and Miles Davis all played at the Casino.
Benny Hooper, known throughout the neighborhood as The Mayor Of Five Points was directly responsible for Five Points gaining the reputation as the Harlem of the West, for its long jazz history and also being mentioned frequently in Jack Kerouacs On the Road.

Benny Hooper was born in Five Points on May 2, 1893 and he held various jobs around Denver until serving his country during World War I. Upon his return from the War, he opened the Ex-Servicemens Club, now Cervantes Other Side, with the Army pay that he had saved during his time served. During the relatively flush 1920s, Benny added a bar, billiard room and a basement jazz joint to his Ex-Servicemens Club.

During the 1930s, Benny opened the Casino Dance Hall, now Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, next door to the Ex-Servicemans Club. The Casino evolved into a two-story hall with balcony seating for 1,000, a 40-foot-long bar, and a huge hardwood dance floor.
